Great point:
What percentage of folks in your church are “introverts”? Do you ever hear anything that reflects sensitivities for introverts? How “extroverted” is your church and even your “style” of spirituality/Christian living?
from Scot McKnight, Introverts in a Church for Extroverts on Adam McHugh’s book Introverts in the Church: Finding Our Place in an Extroverted Culture
I hate to be contrary, but I’m an extrovert in a church of introvertive spiritual practices. Prayers by closing eyes? Bible study alone before classes? Rolled eyes when more than 3 people offer up prayer requests? Ugh.
I will need to follow the links and read more, but honestly while the culture is more extroverted, the spiritual practices in churches are often a disconnect to extroverts. IMO
The hubs boss gave him a Kindle for Christmas. So I promptly downloaded this book to it. It seemed like a good first run for me take with the Kindle.
UMJeremy, the book addresses what you are experiencing. The author acknowledges that there are church traditions (and individual congregations) that do have more introverted bent. However, his examination of the wider Evangelical world (especially those impacted by Charismatic traditions) show a more extroverted preference. Worth the read.
