I love the Voice translation. Our Pastor use it often for Sunday Service and find it an excellent translation. Unlike The Message, this translation grabs my attention and keeps it. I would highly recommend it as it is an easy read but full of wonderful insights.

EricW, I believe the NEB actually does use “mastered” — probably one of the best translations of this verse. The NLT is the update/replacement for the LB, but is a solid scholarly bit of work from the original languages. A very nice translation as well, imo. I agree The Voice probably stands a better chance of actually being read by the “non-interested” than any other I’ve seen.

referencing John 1:5 where I suggest that the darkness has never “grasped” the light due to the dual meaning possible in the English word, which aligns with the dual meaning possible in the Greek word — it can mean either “comprehend” or “seize.” "mastered" might also work, as in mastering a subject or beating someone in an athletic contest. I like The Voice New Testament. I never did warm up to The Message, and without having read The Living Bible (very popular in the '70s when I became a Christian, but I disparaged it as a "paraphrase" (which it is/was) and went with the NASB without ever really looked at the LB ), which may or may not have done some Voice-like phrasing (I don't know; I'm just guessing), my subjective opinion is that it may be the most winsome, user-(who-doesn't-like-the-thought-of-reading-the-Bible)-friendly translation I've ever seen/read. In fact, I'm giving copies (along with copies of Blue Like Jazz) as Christmas gifts to some close family members who fit that category, and The Voice is likely the first translation I've seen/read that I'd feel might have half a chance of getting read by some of them.
