Last week in my series, Then Sings My Soul: The Hymns of My Youth, I covered a hymn by Bill Gaither which I said was not his finest. But what was his finest? I’d have to say I really don’t know… but I did want to select a Gaither hymn this week that must surely be among them: “There’s Something About that Name.” This one seems to have been a favorite of the Gaithers over a number of years, with lyrics by Gloria Gaither and melody by Bill Gaither. A YouTube clip follows the lyrics, to get the hymn in all its essential “Gaitherness.”
There’s Something About That Name
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
There’s just something about that name
Master, Saviour, Jesus
Like the fragrance after the rainJesus, Jesus, Jesus
Let all Heaven and Earth proclaim
Kings and kingdoms
Will all pass away
But there’s something about that Name.
I have to say, I’ve always loved this hymn… and most particularly the second verse. It wasn’t something that we sang in church so much, but I’m glad it was a part of my youth nonetheless.
