As my series “Then Sings My Soul: The Hymns of My Youth” continues, we come to the eighth entry. Thought it was time for a toe-tappin’ hand-clappin’ interlude. Lewis E. Jones wrote this one in 1899:
Power In The Blood
Would you be free from the burden of sin?
There’s power in the blood, power in the blood;
Would you o’er evil a victory win?
There’s wonderful power in the blood!There is pow’r, pow’r, wonder working pow’r
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is pow’r, pow’r, wonder working pow’r
In the precious blood of the Lamb.Would you be free from your passion and pride?
There’s power in the blood, power in the blood;
Come for a cleansing to Calvary’s tide;
There’s wonderful power in the blood!There is pow’r…
Would you be whiter, much whiter than snow?
There’s power in the blood, power in the blood;
Sin stains are lost in its life giving flow.
There’s wonderful power in the blood!There is pow’r…
Would you do service for Jesus your King?
There’s power in the blood, power in the blood;
Would you live daily His praises to sing?
There’s wonderful power in the blood!
This one by my recollection was much more of a Sunday evening song than a Sunday morning one… but as a kid, it was a nice break, one when your toe might tap involuntarily in church. Maybe that’s why it was more of a Sunday evening tune… you wouldn’t be clapping in church so much on a Sunday morning, and this one could easily lead to that, and sometimes did.
I could slag the words on this one… that covered-in-blood metaphor can be harsh for the uninitiated. But years later, this one is downright toe-tappin’ fun. I admit it — I like it.
