That Slate piece is not bad as long as one pays attention to the first comment as well. The democracy process won’t move any faster so long as big business, property developers and foreign multinationals continue to be so obsessed with not offending Beijing.
All this week the people of HK have been reminded that “on country two systems” means “one country” first and foremost. If anything, this might be a good thing since Beijing seems to be suggesting the HKSAR needs to do more to address the wealth gap, spiraling housing costs and healthcare for all. It’s not clear that the cadre that run HK would do that, if left to their own devices.
