One of the things we like to do when we consider the stories we read from the Bible is to try and find a character that we can resonate with… or to try and find one we wouldn’t necessarily gravitate toward and try to put ourselves in their shoes. It’s been done before with many a character from the New Testament, and this being the season of Eastertide, there’s the question of the two thieves who were crucified alongside Jesus that afternoon. In particular, the penitent thief is one whose thoughts we like to attempt to consider. Recently this was done fairly well in a Third Day song, but for those of us who are a little bit longer in the tooth, we might recall another song telling the story from that thief’s perspective, from about two decades earlier. This one runs about 11 minutes, but should be quite appreciated by those who enjoyed yesterday’s Don Francisco song:
Why do we identify so well with the penitent thief—is his story perhaps our own? And when he awoke, what did he really see? What do you look forward to seeing when you “awake” one day?
