We’re developing a new Easter tradition in our family — like Christmas where the kids get to look at the creche and tell the story, we have devised a set of mnemonic devices which the kids use in telling the story. (Huh?)
Present:
Bunny Rabbit (not used, oddly enough)
Easter Egg (as container for perfume)
Donkey
Palm Branches
Silver Coins (Dimes)
Basin & Towel
Cup & plate with bread
Roman Soldiers
Swords & Torches
Sword (Peter’s)
Rooster
Leather strap (Whip)
Purple Cloth (Robe)
Crown of Thorns (from copper wire)
Basin & Soap
Cross
Hammer & Nails
Dice
Sponge with Vinegar
Mary
Black Cloth (or Paper; Darkness)
Spear
Linen Cloth & Spices
Stone
Angel
Hey Bro,
Thanks for the tip! We did this at my house this year. It worked out great. Each item had a slip with verses on it and having the object there really helped the kids (6 and 8) focus on the important element of the reading. They were also able to re-tell the story using the items. Before we put the items away we’re going to play a “game” of mixing them all up and having the kids put them back in order.
I think, like you, we will use the set similarly to our nativity set.
