After such pride in being post-colonial, after distancing itself from European colonialism for so long… has America become the new colonialists of democracy?
Just wondering aloud, that’s all.

Short answer is no. We definitely are more involved in the middle east than we prefer to be. The fact is most Americans would be very hapy to have our troops back home on our own soil. I believe that 9-11 has definitely made us more willing to use force. But as a nation, I don’t think we have any colonial desires at all.
My problem is – those who accuse the US of being “colonial” or worse, “an empire” when we lead, are often the first ones that try to pull us into a war we have nothing to do with or no desire to be involved in , i.e. Kosovo.
When things were deteriorating in Liberia, the world seemed to trying to draw the U.S. into that.
The world just wants us around when it suits them. We’re not the World’s policeman. I’d be very happy becoming a bit of an isolationist.
