Ryan Bolger offers an excellent Brief Snapshot of the Emerging Church. He summarizes eight fundamental distinctives of the emerging church — and very insightfully so. Couches and candles? Not the point… they are merely outworkings of expressing the distinctives which the emerging church holds as values and which differ from the traditional institutional church.
A colleague from another school recently asked if I could list the innovations of Emerging Churches. The question implies that Emerging Churches introduced ‘tweaks’ or glosses, small external changes to expressions of church. However, I believe the change introduced is much more fundamental and cannot be reduced to incremental shifts.
