I’m not normally all that big on these memes, but sometimes they can be hours of fun, telling you things you already strongly suspect…. this one was kinda fun, much more than finding out I would make a “bookish” Disney princess. Anyway, I think Sivin Kit was the first place I saw this, but I’m not sure it’s been all over in the last day or so. Anyway, you’ll all be relieved to know I can keep calling myself an emerging church blogger. My charismatic side takes a real hit though!

You scored as Emergent/Postmodern. You are Emergent/Postmodern in your theology. You feel alienated from older forms of church, you don’t think they connect to modern culture very well. No one knows the whole truth about God, and we have much to learn from each other, and so learning takes place in dialogue. Evangelism should take place in relationships rather than through crusades and altar-calls. People are interested in spirituality and want to ask questions, so the church should help them to do this.
What's your theological worldview? |
I could use some help with definitions for some of the terms in this. If I am going to be labeled I think I should at least understand what it means to be 93% Emergent/Postmodern while I am 68% Evangelical/Holiness/Weslyan and 64% Classical Liberal. And the 57% Charismatic part of me wants to know where can I go to get the 39% fundamentalist cast out of me?
Bro Maynard, I’m also surprised that your Wesleyan score is higher than your Reformed score. Maybe you haven’t completely gone to the Dark Side after all. :)
Eric,
Actually, I tend to lean more towards the Reformed side of the equation, although I am most content to simply live in the tension between the two views.
I’m teasing Brother Maynard because his own thinking changed significantly towards Reformed theology some years ago, which is what makes it funny that his Wesleyan score was higher than his Reformed score.
It probably also points out that this quiz, while interesting, isn’t 100% accurate (my own results were part accurate and part not).
The “dark side” comment was solely because I just saw the new Star Wars movie recently — I meant to imply no value judgments either way. Sorry if I confused or offended you by my comments.
I took this test and was very disappointed with it, not so much because of my results, but because with so many of the questions it was like “well, just pick one, because it’s really none of the above.” On so many of the questions it’s a matter of “well that depends on what you mean by _____.” There was no nuance. Some of the questions I could have answered with a strong agree or a strong disagree depending on definition of terms. And some of them were nearly impossible to answer because some complex theological issues are just not as simple as “I agree” or “I disagree.” And so in my view, this test cannot help but be inaccurate and unreflective of the reality of one’s nuanced and many dimensioned belief.
Robbymac….no problem friend. I need to study up on Reformed theology. I didn’t even HEAR Calvin’s name until college (at Indiana Wesleyan Univ. ahem, ahem) And I think I was just a little sore that I scored so high on the Wesley side of things.
Wow, Eric, I looked at your scores, and I think maybe you’re more Emerging/Postmodern than Brian McLaren!
CJ, I LOL’d (L’dOL?) I’d like to help you but oddly, I didn’t score high enough on charismatic to “really take authority” over that fundie demon. Obviously these memes aren’t accurate, they’re far too simplistic (as Arlen says). I should be much higher on Reformed theology, but one thing about the Reformed position is it tends to be certain… so if you don’t answer 100% Agree on the Reform-ish questions, you probably get demoted some. But if you’re truly emerg/pomo maybe you don’t have many 100% answers in either direction! I wonder how this one was pieced together.
Ah well, an interesting diversion.
btw, for good Reformed theology in practical bits rather than a comprehensive overview, read John Piper (linked in the sidebar).
I’m not sure what my results mean.
75% emergent – this actually surprised me because I’m not very “emerged” yet. Although I’m likely the only emergent person in South Dakota.
71% neo-orthodox – I have no idea what this means.
68% Ev.Hol.Wesleyan – this also surprised me because I grew up in a Reformed church (Dutch background, Heidelberg catechism) although I don’t know if this is the same Reformed theology you are referring to.
I scored equally low in fundamental and charismatic. My adult church experience was charismatic, and while I appreciate many of the things I learned along the way, I never truly fit in with the charismatics and I’m happy with the new title of post-charismatic.
My next door neighbor is a fundamental preacher’s wife. It’s an interesting relationship. She has very strong opinions that I don’t challenge because she’d talk me into the ground. But she loves Jesus with all her heart, and that’s what I love about her.
Interesting quiz.
Well, I guess I will have to live with my fundie thorn in the flesh. Thanks for the recommendation. Your work here is very helpful to me. Living here in the DEEEEP south is difficult at times for a person who has such heretical notions. There has been a small measure of innovation here that I have been personally involved with a couple of times now. They don’t take heretics out to stone them anymore. They drag you into the parking lot and back the church bus over you a couple of times.
Yes, Robbymac, these sorts of things are always fun.
We both came out “Wesleyan”, but from your book recommendations, you are leaning in a Calvinist direction. ;)
I, on the other hand am allergic to Tulips. ;)
Peace
