Well, here it is, the late 1970’s, going on 1985. You know, so much of the music we hear today is preprogrammed electronic disco, you never get a chance to hear master bluesmen practicing their craft anymore. By the year 2006, the music known today as the blues will exist only in the classical records department of your local public library, so ladies and gentlemen: while we still can, let us welcome, from Rock Island, Illinois, the blues band of Joliet Jake and Elwood Blues: the Blues Brothers.
Hmmm, David as a master bluesman… the Psalms as the blues. Robert Johnson, Blind Willie Johnson …David, the Psalmist. Check out this article by Jamie Howison, and consider how the blues resonate in the Psalms.
Ah yes, the opening lines of the “Briefcase Full of Blues” album. We are certainly doing the nostalgia trip today, aren’t we? :)
Glenn Kaiser (who has recorded quite a number of blues albums himself) pointed out once upon a time that the majority of the Psalms (57) are “lament”, which Kaiser suggests is OT for “blues”.
And I’ve always been a big fan of Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Colin James, Muddy Waters, and of course, B.B. King.
I’ll have to give Jamie’s article a look-see…
