This evening was spent (in part) watching Luther, a movie made last year based upon the life of Martin Luther. Now there’s a guy who radically changed the way we do church: “Here I stand, I can do no other. God help me.”
At one point in the movie, my wife turns and asks me, “Is that as real as Christianity was then?” Arresting question, scary answer. Lesson: it turns out power corrupts, even in the church. The fact that Christian freedom was so nearly smothered so completely is intriguing. But there’s always a remnant.
Take it as an encouragement that no matter how few people resonate with your voice, a lack of resonance doesn’t make you wrong. So if you feel you’re standing on the verge of a major change in the wineskin of church and the only resonance you can find for your voice is in the online ramblings of people disgruntled with church who advocate anything from ecclesiastical anarchy to house church, well, take heart. That’s what I’m doing.
